This article considers the conditions under which dual frame web–phone designs may be cost-effective for sampling rare groups within the general population. We show that savings may be available from combining web and telephone to take advantage of the low cost of the former and the high coverage of the latter, but the situation is more complex than one might have expected. We suggest guidelines for implementing such studies, and discuss the implications of changes in our design assumptions.
